Pulling the Plug on Windows Vista |

Yesterday I got so fed up I finally did it. I retrograded my nice, new, Dual Core Intel-based PC laptop down to Windows XP Service Pack 2. It had been running Windows Vista "Ultimate" for the past four months. "Ultimate" my fanny. Try "watching paint dry" but through really cool looking translucent windows. I had watched one too many programs lapse into semi-consciousness, one too many drivers throw up in a “Blue Screen of Death, and system performance that could only be described as a monumental step backward into the ice age. The eye candy appeal of Vista simply wasn’t enough to entice me to stay on board the Vista train for even one more day. |

I wanted to believe. I wanted to buy, drink, and savor the MacBook Air Kool Aid. Not only that, I wanted my Apple stock to go up. I wanted to put my hands on the MacBook Air and fall madly, deeply, head-over-heals in love with Steve Jobs’ latest miracle. Snore. I went over to the local Apple store today and spent an intimate hour with the MacBook Air. I picked it up. I closed the cover and marveled at the svelte, paper-thin profile. I held it aloft in one hand, sort like a waiter delivering a tray full of obscenely priced aperitifs. Then I put it back down again, opened the lid and gave it the litmus test. Yuck. I’ll come right out and tell you what struck me the second I put my hand to that keyboard. Cardboard. |
